Top Bird Watching Spots near Bangalore

Birdwatching has been a popular pastime since time immemorial. For centuries, people have been fascinated by the beauty and mystery of the numerous species of birds. Perhaps reminding us of our own nature, these amazing creatures are at once magnificent and delicate. The following are the best places around the globe to capture these stunning species in all its glory.


Lalbagh Botanical Gardens :- Located bang in the middle of bustling Bangalore, the Lal Bagh Gardens feature plenty of wetlands and gardens, rendering it a hotspot for numerous species of birds. Stay away from weekends and public holidays and you can grab an eyeful of stunning feathery friends apart from vibrant butterflies. Hebbal lake :- Located in northern Bangalore, this is a fairly small lake that attracts a good number of Pelicans, Storks and Waterfowls. Best time to visit during early morning and late evening.


Tippagondanahalli :- Around 35 km east of Bangalore, on the Bangalore-Magadi road, lies this quaint lake that is home to numerous species of birds, especially raptors. Try to go during peak monsoon as the majority of birds flock to the area during this time. This is a popular weekend summer holiday spot for Bangaloreans.


 
Kokkarebellur :- A highly popular hotspot for watching Pelicans and Black Ibis located around 80 km southwest of Bangalore. Make sure to go during the season as the area is just a nondescript village otherwise. Many tour operators include Kokkarebellur as part of their india tour packages that as Bangalore in the itinerary.

Shivanahalli :- This is a highly recommended spot for birdwatching enthusiasts located on the periphery of Bannerghatta National Park.  There is a Ramakrishna Mission ashram in the area which provides birdwatchers with food and guides. There are long walking stretches in the area, so make sure you pack enough water and food for the trip. Shivanahalli is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations for people as far as Salem and Krishnagiri.

Devarayana Durga State Forest :- Around 60 km from Bangalore lies this protected forest that is home to the famed Yellow Throated Bulbul. A highly recommended spot for anyone remotely interested in bird and wildlife watching. 


 
Nandi Hills :- Located on the Bangalore- Hyderabad highway, around 50 km from Bangalore, the area is home to several species of birds. However, you will require some patience as the season varies constantly.

Manchinbele :- On the Bangalore-Magadi main road, swerve to the left at the signpost indicating the Manchinbele dam to arrive at a secluded hilltop home to numerous species. The access to the area is restricted so ensure you get all permits prior to the visit. The best time to visit is early mornings.
